They had to put up with him/her for the last 18/22 years and now you want to live somewhere where every argument discussion will be 3 to 1. No thank you. Hard enough getting thru the first 5 years without ‘mom’s’ opinion making judgement calls harder to agree upon.

I think it speaks volumes about the widow/widower that they were together for however long it was. Just because the person is gone, the love doesn't leave with them. I think it's always in the heart of the one left behind. But we have the capacity to another.
It sounds silly to hold it against them.
